πŸ›οΈ Quilt Size

About This Tool

Quilting involves three layers β€” the pieced top, batting in the middle, and backing fabric. Plus you need binding to finish the edges. This calculator tells you how much material you need for each. Select your quilt size or enter custom dimensions. The calculator adds the standard margins quilters need β€” extra backing for longarm loading, enough binding for the perimeter plus joins, and batting sized correctly for your project.

How to Use

1. Select standard quilt size or enter custom dimensions 2. Choose what you're calculating (backing, binding, or batting) 3. Select your fabric width (quilting cotton is usually 44") 4. View yardage needed

Formula

Backing: Quilt size + 4" on each side = Backing size Binding: Perimeter + 20" for joins, cut 2.5" strips Batting: Quilt size + 2-4" on each side

Frequently Asked Questions

How much bigger should quilt backing be?
For home machine quilting, backing should be 4 inches larger than the quilt top on all sides (8 inches total in each dimension). For longarm quilting, add 6-8 inches per side. The excess gets trimmed after quilting.
How much binding do I need?
Calculate the perimeter of your quilt (2Γ—length + 2Γ—width), then add 15-20 inches for corner turns, joining strips, and finishing. A queen quilt (90Γ—100") needs about 390 inches of binding, or about 11 yards of 2.5" strips.
What are standard quilt sizes?
Baby: 36Γ—52". Throw: 50Γ—65". Twin: 66Γ—90". Full: 80Γ—90". Queen: 90Γ—100". King: 108Γ—100". Add drop for bed quilts β€” typically 15-20" on sides and bottom.
