About This Tool
Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between width and height. Whether you're resizing video for YouTube (16:9), cropping photos for Instagram (1:1 or 4:5), or designing UI for ultrawide monitors (21:9), you need to maintain the correct ratio to avoid distortion.
This calculator works two ways. First, enter a width and aspect ratio to calculate the matching height (or enter height to get width). Second, enter any dimensions to find their aspect ratio โ useful when you have an image and need to know what ratio it is.
Presets for common ratios used in video (16:9, 4:3, 21:9), photography (3:2, 4:3), social media (1:1, 4:5, 9:16), and cinema (2.35:1, 1.85:1) make quick work of standard formats.
How to Use
1. Choose a mode: "Calculate Dimension" or "Find Ratio"
2. For Calculate Dimension:
- Click a preset ratio or enter a custom ratio (e.g., 16:9)
- Enter width OR height โ the other calculates automatically
- Lock the value you want to keep fixed
3. For Find Ratio:
- Enter both width and height
- See the simplified aspect ratio and common name (if recognized)
4. Copy the result or share via link
Formula
Calculate height from width:
Height = Width รท (Ratio Width รท Ratio Height)
Example: 1920 รท (16 รท 9) = 1920 รท 1.778 = 1080
Calculate width from height:
Width = Height ร (Ratio Width รท Ratio Height)
Example: 1080 ร (16 รท 9) = 1080 ร 1.778 = 1920
Find aspect ratio (GCD method):
Divide both dimensions by their Greatest Common Divisor
Example: 1920ร1080 โ GCD is 120 โ 1920รท120 : 1080รท120 = 16:9
