Frequently Asked Questions

What fabric count should I use?
14 count Aida is the most popular choice — it's easy to see and work with while giving good detail. Use 11ct for beginners or poor eyesight, 16-18ct for finer detail, and 22ct+ for very detailed work. For evenweave and linen, 28ct over 2 threads equals 14 stitches per inch (same as 14ct Aida).
How much margin should I leave?
Leave at least 2-3 inches on each side for framing. If you plan to use a large mat or fancy frame, leave 4 inches. For hoops or small projects, 1-2 inches may be enough. It's always better to have extra fabric than not enough — you can't add more later!
How do I calculate stitches for evenweave over 2?
When stitching 'over 2' on evenweave or linen, each cross stitch covers 2 threads in each direction. So 28 count linen over 2 = 14 stitches per inch (same size as 14ct Aida). This calculator automatically handles this — just select your evenweave count and it calculates the effective stitches per inch.
How accurate is the thread estimate?
The estimate assumes full cross stitches with 2 strands and includes thread for starting, ending, and traveling on the back. For partial coverage designs (not every square stitched), reduce the coverage percentage. For designs with lots of backstitch or French knots, you may need slightly more thread.
How many hours does a cross stitch project take?
It varies enormously based on pattern complexity, your speed, and how often you stitch. A 100×100 stitch pattern (10,000 stitches) takes roughly 50-100 hours for most stitchers. This calculator lets you estimate based on your personal stitching speed — track a few sessions to find your rate.
What's the difference between Aida and evenweave?
Aida has obvious holes in a grid pattern, making it easy to see where to stitch. Evenweave and linen have a more subtle weave and are usually stitched 'over 2' threads, giving a softer look. Linen is slightly irregular, adding character. Most beginners start with Aida; many experienced stitchers prefer linen for its drape and appearance.
How do I convert a picture to cross stitch pattern size?
Pattern size depends on the detail you want. A rough guide: for a recognizable portrait, aim for at least 100-150 stitches on the shortest side. For detailed landscapes or complex images, 200-300+ stitches. Use pattern-making software to convert images — it will tell you the exact stitch count.
