About This Tool
Planning a cross stitch project? This calculator tells you everything you need before you start. Enter your pattern dimensions (in stitches) and fabric count, and instantly see the finished size, how much fabric to buy, estimated thread needs, and how long the project might take.
Whether you're working on Aida, evenweave, or linen, the calculator handles the math. It accounts for margins (essential for framing), calculates thread length for ordering DMC skeins, and gives you a realistic time estimate based on your stitching speed.
No more surprises mid-project โ know your fabric requirements, thread needs, and time commitment before you make the first stitch.
How to Use
1. Enter your pattern dimensions in stitches (width ร height)
2. Select your fabric count (14ct Aida is most common)
3. Set your desired margin for framing (2-3 inches recommended)
4. Adjust coverage % if your design isn't full coverage
5. Select your stitching speed for time estimate
6. Read the results: finished size, fabric to buy, thread estimate, and time
7. Copy results or share the link
Formula
Finished size (inches) = Pattern stitches รท Fabric count
Finished size (cm) = Finished size (inches) ร 2.54
Fabric needed = Finished size + (Margin ร 2)
For evenweave/linen stitched "over 2":
Effective count = Thread count รท 2
(28ct linen over 2 = 14 stitches per inch)
Thread estimate:
~1.5 inches of thread per full cross stitch (2 strands)
1 DMC skein = 8 meters
Time estimate:
Hours = Total stitches รท Stitches per hour
